The West Campus Pedestrianway was conceived in the 2000 Master Plan as being an important pedestrian connection linking the West Quad with the Biomedical Research precinct and was realized in 2005 with the construction of the Fitzpatrick Center and and Bostock Library, both of which span the walkway with bridge connections that keep the path open and accessible. The eastern terminus of the pedestrianway is Engineering Quad, with the western end proposed as being a future transportation center, with the Sarah P. Duke Gardens beyond. A consistent palette of paving materials, site walls, lighting, planting, benches and other site furniture create a unified experience throughout the entire project even as the architecture changes from building to building.
